"I would definitely want to hear more of you," - remarked Gary Graffman after her performance at the Oxford Piano Festival in July 2009. A third prizewinner at the 2008 Nikolai Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Paris, Yann Shie holds a Doctoral Degree in Piano Performance from the prestigious Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire and two minors in voice accompaniment and chamber music.
One of the most versatile musicians from Malaysia, Yann Shie performs, lectures, writes and also stepped in as Assistant Stage Manager for both the Mariinsky Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet from Russia when they debuted at the Esplanade in 2011 and 2013 respectively.
Her debut at the age of 13 with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall Orchestra playing the Grieg Piano Concerto, launched her performing career. A year later, she made her first appearance abroad at the Liszt Memorial Concert Hall in Budapest, Hungary. Since then, Yann Shie has been a frequent performer in Malaysia, playing in various concert halls including the Dewan Merdeka in PWTC, the Komtar Auditorium and the Dewan Budaya at the University of Science in Penang.
Throughout her 10 years in Moscow, Yann Shie's playing has taken her from the Rachmaninov House Museum Estate in Tambov to the Sheremet'yev Palace in St. Petersburg, the Prokofiev Museum in Moscow to the Blüthner Pavillion in Leipzig. She was a frequent performer at the Oxford Philomusica Piano Festival at the Oxford University between 2007-2009, the 2008 Nice Summer Music Festival in France. In 2009, she conducted an all-Schumann at the Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Taiwan. Recently, she was invited to speak and conduct master classes at the National Taiwan University of Arts and Shih Chien University in Taipei and also conducted a seminar/master class for the Piano Ensemble at NTU, Singapore on Russian two piano works.
Yann Shie has worked with internationally renowned pianists and pedagogues including Sulamita Aronovsky, Vladimir Krainev, John Lill, Xu Zhong and Patsy Toh in master classes.
Yann Shie is a frequent visiting pianist for music faculties in local Malaysian universities, including UPM, UiTM, USM and UCSI and conducts teachers' workshops for private music schools in Malaysia and Singapore. She is also frequently seen on the adjudicating panel in local competitions and festival - the annual Malaysia Youth Orchestra Foundation Festival Malaysia since 2012, the 2012 Kota Kinabalu Music Festival, and the 2013 Asia Piano Competition Malaysia Region to name a few. She has worked as soloist with the KLPac Orchestra (Yellow River Piano Concerto & Rhapsody in Blue), the Selangor Symphony Orchestra (Mozart Triple Piano Concerto 1st soloist) and at the HSBC Classics 2009 and 2011, staging chamber repertoires from piano trios to quartets and quintets.
Apart from the traditional classical solo repertoire, Yann Shie is also working on premiering new compositions by American Kathleen Ryan, fellow pianist/composer Alexander Timofeev (he specially commissioned the cadenza for Rhapsody in Blue), Estonian Tðnu Kðrvits in South-East Asia.
Yann Shie is very grateful for the constant support from various mediums, including Graceful Piano and The Cremona Music of Strings in Setia Alam. When she is not running her fingers on the keyboard (both piano and laptop), she can be found running to Rachmaninov on the streets.
